As wintry weather and sub-zero temperatures continue to sweep across the country, the unseasonal flurries were welcomed by millions of children enjoying their half-term holidays.
The cold snap has been caused by an area of low pressure from the north that has dragged down Arctic air.
As the pictures demonstrate, the icy conditions have brought scenes of a winter wonderland throughout the UK.
The surprise snowfall saw large parts of the country wake up to its first October snow blanketing since 1934.
The rest of the South saw its first pre-Halloween snowfalls since the 1970s.
While the wintry dusting may disappear as quickly as it arrived, further snow has been forecast.
And the weather has even got the bookmakers worried, forcing many to cut the odds on a white Christmas from 8/1 to 6/1 after a flurry of bets.
