Goli Otok was first used as a prison during the presence of Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the WWII ended, Yugoslavic authorities have deported there about 1200 political convicts and left them on the island. Island’s name Goli Otok (Barren Island) tells us that island had not a much of vegetation and soil on it. It is mostly formed of rocks.
The prisoners who would come there were forced to work in quarries and mines on the island. The prison was known as a rough place where prisoners would be often beaten and left to starve. It was closed in 1988. Today it is a tourist attraction and it is also used by the local shepherds and fishermen
